Ever wondered why some photos just seem to “pop” more than others? Composition plays a huge role! Composition refers to the arrangement of elements within your frame, and mastering it can take your photography to the next level.
Here are some key composition techniques to explore:

- Rule of Thirds: Imagine dividing your frame into a 3×3 grid. The most visually interesting points tend to lie where the lines intersect. Place your subject off-center for a more dynamic composition as in the image below.
- Leading Lines: Use natural lines in your environment, like a winding path or a fence, to draw the viewer’s eye into the photo and towards your subject. In the image below the train tracks and railings serve to draw your eyes focus inwards into the frame.
- Foreground, Mid-ground, Background: Create depth in your photos by layering elements at different distances. A close-up flower in the foreground can frame a distant mountain range in the background. In the image below we have ferns in the foreground, 2 people in the mid-ground and foliage in the background
Example: Imagine photographing a lone tree on a vast plain. Using the rule of thirds, position the tree slightly off-center to the right. A winding path leading towards the tree serves as a leading line, drawing the viewer’s eye into the image.
Bonus Tip: Experiment with negative space! Leaving empty areas in your frame can emphasize your subject and add a sense of peace or mystery.
